Cannon Center, Brigham Young University – Provo, Utah
Architectural Nexus was asked to determine the feasibility of each of two scenarios for change at the 50 year old Cannon Center, a student services, social, and dining facility serving the 1,000 bed
student residence complex at BYU. As architects, we were asked to recommend either remodeling the existing facility in place or showing how it could be replaced on the grounds of the Helaman Halls
complex.
Because site conditions were limited, the option of rebuilding the building adjacent to the existing Cannon Center was not an option. Architectural Nexus, together with its team of
engineers, designed a hybrid approach, which allowed for the phased replacement of the existing facility and the continued occupancy of all student service and dining operations, while new
phased construction would proceed. This option was respectful of wider campus circulation systems and economized on the use of the limited site area.
