Eccles Jones Medical Sciences Building, University of Utah
- Salt Lake City, Utah
This six level building houses the University of Utah School of Medicine’s research programs and includes multimedia lecture halls and classrooms, advisor offices, seminar rooms, laboratories and conference areas with the latest technology and equipment.
A unique feature called an “oxbridge” space will be located on each floor in the center of the building. The term comes from Oxford and Cambridge Universities and designates space used exclusively for researchers to discuss their work with each other.
Because the building is used strictly for research, vibration within the building is an important consideration. To meet this requirement, a poured-on-place reinforced concrete system was used.
Another feature is the emphasis on tight security. Institutions engaged in federal research have new security standard and the building will be somewhat restricted.
