The Salt Lake County library at Daybreak is a new public library in a transit-oriented and pedestrian friendly mixed-use part of South Jordan, Utah. The library design is built on the philosophy and values of New Urbanism. Emphasis is placed on the street as a quality space within this community. As such, the urban aspects of this design focus on maximizing public space in and around the new library. The design features ground floor uses that are physically and visually connected to the adjacent streetscape and higher ceilings are provided to ease visual transition between exterior and interior spaces. With a goal to create a sense of place and to increase the presence of what will be a relatively small building surrounded by much larger buildings, this library includes an accessible green roof which will engage viewers from the surrounding balconies above. Native landscapes on the roof of this public building will be accessible 24/7/365, and represent the rewilding of Daybreak’s dense Town Center. Ultimately, the building tops out with solar panel shade canopy for those enjoying the public roof space.
