The Roy Innovation Center provides a space for the nation’s best engineers to collaborate on exciting technologies in the realm of aerospace engineering. The design reflects the importance of aerospace technology; as seen in the dimpled metal panels across the project, inspired by the aluminum panels of 20th century aircraft. All buildings are composed of tilt up concrete to create both cohesive and distinct facades. Different tints were mixed into the concrete, and an assortment of molds were used for casting to create variety in color and texture. Accents of black metals and cedar wood mix contrasting cool and warm tones throughout the development. The tilt up concrete also provides efficient insulation of the building. This reduces energy consumption while keeping the buildings cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Other phases of the project employ wooden louvers and deep-set windows to create passive cooling and warming, further reducing energy consumption.
Due to the classified nature of the work at RIC, employees must pass through security each day. To reduce the number of security checks, the design includes a series of bridges that connect the secured buildings. The buildings surround a common outdoor courtyard, which includes a volleyball and pickleball court, food trucks, BBQs, and a large lawn. This provides a communal space for employees to relax and connect, whether on their own or at corporate events. It is also used as a place for distinguished guests, such as the governor, to speak with them on important occasions.
