HCI Cyclotron
Location
Salt Lake City, UT
Project Size
6,000 SF
Huntsman Cancer Institute's new cyclotron is a beacon of hope for patients in Utah. The new cyclotron and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Production facility at the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) provides a statewide resource for manufacturing radiopharmaceuticals used in positron emission tomography (PET) scans, a crucial tool for diagnosing and treating cancer. The shelled space retains the original design of the pre-existing lab, while making space for updated equipment and programming nearly a decade after opening its doors. This facility also includes a drug manufacturing lab, a radio pharmacy for dispensing patient doses, and a shipping/receiving area with dedicated loading dock for deliveries of PET drugs. Limited space on the site to accommodate the loading dock required careful consideration and collaboration of the design team and the owners to design an efficient but practical solution.
The HCI Cyclotron requires strict compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements due to the use of radioactive materials, manufacturing of drugs, and preparation of patient doses. ISO clean room certification and FDA regulations require an elaborate mechanical system supporting production laboratories and existing mechanical elements. Working spaces were designed with occupational and procedural safety in mind. The exterior design worked within specific aesthetic requirements in order to harmonize with the existing buildings and surrounding hillside. With the new cyclotron, HCI is poised to make significant strides in cancer research and treatment. This cutting-edge technology brings hope to countless patients and their families, underscoring HCI's dedication to improving lives.
