Huntsman Cancer Institute Breaks Ground on Landmark Vineyard Facility

Updated: Apr 24

In a historic step for cancer care, the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah has broken ground on a $400 million Comprehensive Cancer Center in Vineyard, its second facility and largest-ever investment. Designed by Architectural Nexus, the 272,000-square-foot complex will anchor Vineyard’s Utah City development, delivering cutting-edge treatment and research to Utah County and the broader Mountain West.

Architecture Tailored for Growth and Healing

Architectural Nexus’s design merges functionality with innovation, addressing the region’s explosive population growth. Site preparation began in November 2024, focusing on seamless integration of roads, utilities, and community infrastructure. The facility’s collaborative spaces, connecting clinicians, researchers, and students, prioritize scientific advancement and patient-centered care.

Transforming Access to Care

Positioned in Vineyard, the center slashes travel times by over an hour for patients across central and southern Utah, where 40,000+ annual visits from Utah County alone highlighted critical demand. Its comprehensive offerings, multidisciplinary clinics, radiation oncology, advanced imaging, infusion services, and acute care are consolidated under one roof to maximize efficiency and comfort.

Research and Education at the Forefront

Beyond treatment, the facility will drive breakthroughs through AI-powered computational labs, clinical trials, and partnerships with Utah Valley University and Brigham Young University. These collaborations aim to train the next generation of healthcare professionals while accelerating discoveries in immunotherapy and precision medicine.

A Community Driven Vision

The April 8 groundbreaking drew 450+ attendees, including patients, donors, and leaders like CEO Mary Beckerle and University of Utah President Taylor Randall. Fueled by a $75 million Huntsman Family Foundation gift and additional state and private funding, the project has secured 75% of its budget ahead of its late 2028 opening. This architectural and medical milestone embodies Huntsman’s mission to eradicate cancer while serving as a beacon of hope for communities across the West.
